How to calculate the gas consumption of factory equipment

Calculation of the gas consumption of plant equipment needs to be carried out step by step. The following is providedsystematic approachandpractical formula

1. Statistical equipment information

  1. inventory listing: List all gas-using equipment (such as pneumatic tools, control valves, purging devices, etc.) and record the following parameters:
    • Equipment type and quantity
    • Air consumption by single equipment (unit: m³/min or L/s)
    • Work cycle (e.g. daily running time, weekly working days)
  2. Peak demand identification: Mark equipment with high instantaneous gas consumption (such as pulse injection valves), and the peak coefficient needs to be calculated separately.

2. Basic calculation steps

  1. Daily air consumption of single equipment

  • : Rated air consumption of equipment (m³/min)
  • : Daily running time (minutes)
  • : Load factor (0.6-1.0, based on equipment utilization)
  1. Total plant demand

  • : System leakage (usually estimated based on 5%-10% of total gas volume)
  • : Safety factor (recommended 10%-20%)

3. Leakage estimation method

  1. Pipeline leakage formula

  • : Total length of pipeline (m)
  • : Pipe inner diameter (mm)
  • : Work pressure (bar)
  • : Leakage coefficient (0.001 for seamless steel pipes, 0.005 for threaded joints)
  1. rapid estimates
Estimate based on system pressure level:
    • 7bar system: leakage ≈ total gas volume ×8%
    • 4bar system: leakage ≈ total gas volume ×5%

4. Peak coefficient correction

  • pulse equipment: If the injection valve needs to be superimposed with instantaneous flow (calculated according to the equipment action frequency)
  • Multiple equipment linkage: Considering the probability of simultaneous start-up, it is recommended to multiply it by a factor of 1.2-1.5

5. Recommended utility tools

  1. Gas volume calculation software
    • KAESER Sigma Air Manager
    • Atlas Copco Air Solutions Tool
  2. online calculator
    • Compressed air system energy consumption calculator (equipment list and operating parameters need to be provided)

6. Example calculation

scene: A factory has 10 pneumatic wrenches (each consumes 0.2m³/min), which run for 4 hours a day, with a load rate of 80%, and a system pressure of 7bar.

  1. Daily gas consumption per unit

  2. Total basic needs

  3. leakage(at 8%):

  4. safety margin(15%):

Note: The actual calculation needs to be combined with the factory layout plan and equipment manual. It is recommended that the compressed air supplier provide on-site audit services.

How much compressed air does the medical industry need?

The compressed air system in the medical industry needs to focus on “safety, cleanliness and stability”. It is recommended to be designed by a professional medical engineering team and regularly verified by third parties (such as testing according to HTMS standards). For life support equipment (such as ECMO), an independent backup air source and a manual switching device are required.
