The food industry typically requires compliance with the highest or next-highest class under this standard to ensure gas purity.

Key Quality Indicators for Food-Grade Compressed Air

Based on the aforementioned standards, compressed air that comes into direct contact with food must be subject to stringent control across the following three core dimensions:

  • Oil content controlFood-grade compressed air must meet an oil-free standard. Within the relevant purification classes, this typically means achieving the highest‑level total oil content—specifically, keeping the oil content strictly below an extremely low threshold to completely prevent oil droplets from contaminating food.
  • Moisture and Pressure Dew PointMoisture in compressed air can cause pipeline corrosion and promote microbial growth. Standards require that the pressure dew point of the air be lower than the lowest ambient temperature in the application environment; therefore, an adsorption dryer is typically installed to achieve a significantly reduced pressure dew point, ensuring that no free water precipitates from the air.
  • Solid particles and microorganismsDust and bacteria in the air must be removed through multi-stage, high-precision filtration. Solid particles are typically required to meet micron-level interception standards. For applications involving direct air blow‑off onto food, a terminal‑stage bactericidal filter should also be installed to ensure that microbial indicators comply with food safety requirements.

Selection and System Configuration of Air Compressors in the Food Industry

To meet stringent national standards, the selection of compressors and the design of aftertreatment systems in the food industry must be tailored to specific requirements.

  • Oil-free at the sourceIt is recommended to use an oil-free air compressor to eliminate the possibility of lubricating oil entering the compressed air system at the source.
  • A comprehensive post-processing systemEven when using an oil-free air compressor, oil vapors present in the ambient air can still be drawn in and compressed. Therefore, the system must be equipped with a pre-filter, a high-efficiency oil‑removal filter, an activated‑carbon filter, and an adsorption dryer to establish a comprehensive purification chain.
  • Pipeline Material and Terminal Filtration: The delivery pipeline shall be constructed from corrosion-resistant materials such as stainless steel to prevent secondary contamination. A food-grade sterilizing filter must be installed upstream of the point of gas use to serve as a critical barrier for ensuring food safety.
