Constructing an air compressor room adjacent to an 18-meter-high plant building is a common industrial layout. However, low winter temperatures impose stricter requirements on the operation of the compressors and the safety of the machine room. With appropriate measures taken during design, construction, and routine maintenance, safe year-round operation can be ensured.

Antifreeze and Thermal Insulation Measures for Compressor Rooms in Winter

During winter, when temperatures plummet, air compressors and associated pipelines are susceptible to freeze damage. The following protective measures should be taken:

  • Pipeline insulation:Compressed air pipelines and cooling water pipes exposed outdoors must be wrapped with high-quality insulation to prevent freezing and rupture.
  • Data center heating:The air compressor room shall be equipped with appropriate heating to ensure that the indoor temperature remains above the equipment’s minimum allowable operating temperature, typically recommended to be no lower than 5°C.
  • Condensate drainage:During the winter, increase the frequency of condensate drainage at the low points of gas storage tanks and pipelines to prevent water accumulation, freezing, and blockage of the piping.

Fire and Explosion Protection and Ventilation Design

During operation, air compressors generate high temperatures, and some models use lubricating oil. Even in winter, despite the low ambient temperatures, fire and explosion hazards must not be overlooked.

  • Ventilation and Heat Dissipation:Even in winter, air compressors still require adequate ventilation. Adjustable intake and exhaust vents should be designed to prevent cold air from blowing directly onto the equipment while ensuring effective heat dissipation, thereby avoiding excessively high temperatures in the machine room that could pose safety risks.
  • Fire-fighting equipment:The computer room must be equipped with fire‑fighting facilities in accordance with relevant standards, and their effectiveness must be inspected regularly.
  • Electrical Safety:In winter, the air is dry, making static electricity more likely to occur. Electrical wiring in computer rooms should be properly grounded to prevent the buildup of static charge and potential fires.

Structural Safety and Seismic Protection Measures

The 18-meter-high main plant building and the adjacent air compressor room shall be structurally independent or provided with effective connection measures.

  • Isolated footing:During operation, air compressors generate vibrations. It is recommended to provide the compressor room with an independent foundation to prevent vibration transmission to the main plant building and to safeguard its structural integrity.
  • Shock-absorbing installation:Vibration-isolating pads or flexible joints shall be installed on the compressor body and at pipeline connections to reduce operating noise and vibration.
  • Snow load:In winter, the snow load on the roof of the compressor room must be taken into account; the roof structure should be designed to withstand the local extreme snowfall to prevent collapse.

Daily Inspection and Maintenance

Winter is a peak season for equipment failures, making regular daily inspections all the more critical.

Maintenance personnel should regularly inspect the lubricating oil’s viscosity and level, and replace it with a low-viscosity grade suitable for winter use when necessary. At the same time, closely monitor the equipment’s operating sounds, temperatures, and pressure parameters, and shut down and inspect immediately upon detecting any abnormalities to ensure the air compressor room operates safely and reliably throughout the winter.
