Although the rod mill is driven by an electric motor, its auxiliary systems have a well-defined demand for compressed air. The primary points of air consumption include:

Basic Principles for Gas Consumption Calculation

Accurately calculating the compressed air demand is a prerequisite for selecting the appropriate air compressor. In engineering calculations, it is typically necessary to comprehensively consider the following factors:

  • Summary of Rated Air Consumption: Calculate the theoretical air consumption of pneumatic clutches, dust collection equipment, and control components under standard conditions, respectively.
  • Simultaneous use coefficientDue to the fact that gas‑demand points rarely reach their peak simultaneously, a reasonable simultaneous‑use factor should be determined based on the actual process flow to prevent oversizing of equipment and subsequent energy waste.
  • Pipeline leakage coefficientConsidering the minor leaks at pipeline connections in industrial environments, the total calculated quantity is typically multiplied by a safety factor greater than 1.
  • Environmental correctionIf the equipment operates in high-altitude or extreme-temperature environments, changes in air density will affect the air compressor’s actual volumetric efficiency and necessitate appropriate parameter adjustments.

Recommendations for Air Compressor Selection and System Configuration

Based on the gas consumption calculations, when selecting air compressors and configuring the compressed air supply system, particular attention should be given to the following aspects:

  • Exhaust pressure and flow rate matchingThe air compressor’s rated discharge pressure should be slightly higher than the system’s maximum required pressure. To address the pneumatic clutch’s momentary high-flow demand, it is recommended to install a sufficiently sized air receiver tank for buffering, rather than simply increasing the compressor’s capacity.
  • Air quality managementControl instruments and precision valves are highly sensitive to moisture, oil, and particulate contaminants in compressed air. At the system’s downstream end, post-treatment equipment such as refrigerant dryers and precision filters should be installed as needed to ensure air quality.
  • Backup mechanismFor operating conditions with extremely stringent continuous production requirements, it is recommended to operate multiple compressors in parallel and to provide a standby unit to ensure the reliability and flexibility of the air-supply system.
