Can the air compressor be placed in the workshop?

As a critical power source in industrial production, the selection of an air compressor’s installation location directly affects its operational efficiency and service life. To shorten supply pipelines and minimize pressure losses, many companies consider placing the air compressor directly within the production workshop. So, can an air compressor be installed in the workshop? The answer is yes, but only if a strict set of environmental and installation requirements are met.

Ventilation and Heat Dissipation Requirements

During the compression of air, air compressors generate substantial amounts of heat. In a confined, poorly ventilated workshop, ambient temperatures can rise rapidly, causing the compressor to trip frequently due to overheating and potentially even damaging the main unit.

  • Exhaust ventilation design:A dedicated exhaust duct must be installed for the air compressor to discharge the hot air directly outside the workshop.
  • Air intake assurance:Ensure that the compressor room or installation area receives an adequate supply of fresh, cool air, and that the air intake is fitted with a dust-proof screen.
  • Ambient temperature:The ambient temperature in the workshop should generally be kept within an appropriate range to prevent summer heat from overloading the equipment.

Noise and Vibration Control

During operation, air compressors generate significant mechanical and aerodynamic noise. If installed directly in densely populated workshops, they can adversely affect workers’ physical and mental health as well as their productivity.

  • Soundproofing measures:It is recommended to construct a dedicated soundproof room for the air compressor within the workshop, or to select equipment equipped with an integrated silent enclosure.
  • Shock absorption treatment:Vibration‑isolating pads shall be installed at the base of the equipment to prevent vibration from being transmitted through the floor and affecting the operation of other precision instruments in the workshop.

Environmental Cleanliness Considerations

The quality of the air drawn into an air compressor directly affects the service life of its internal components and the quality of the compressed air it delivers. If the workshop contains significant dust or corrosive gases, serious risks may arise.

In machining workshops with high dust levels, the air compressor should be located away from pollution sources, or a high-efficiency pre-filter should be installed at the intake. If volatile chemical gases are present in the workshop, it is not recommended to place the air compressor inside, as compression of these gases could lead to safety incidents or corrosion of internal components.

Spatial Layout and Safety Distances

When planning the air compressor’s location within the workshop, sufficient space for operation and maintenance must be provided.

  • Maintenance Access:At least one meter of clearance should be maintained around the equipment to facilitate routine inspections, maintenance, and component replacement.
  • Safety distance:The air compressor and air receiver tank shall be located away from flammable and explosive materials and positioned clear of the workshop’s primary material-handling routes to prevent collisions during equipment handling.

Drainage and Pipeline Design

Condensate is generated in compressed air systems. During installation in the workshop, the condensate drainage path should be carefully planned to prevent water accumulation that could compromise the floor conditions. Additionally, the air supply piping should be kept as short and straight as possible, with a minimum number of bends, to minimize pressure drops and ensure stable air pressure at the points of use throughout the workshop.

Placing an air compressor in the workshop is feasible, provided that adequate ventilation and heat dissipation, noise and vibration reduction, dust filtration, and safe layout are implemented. Proper planning not only ensures the compressor’s stable operation but also fosters a safe and comfortable production environment.
