Potential Risks of Operating Gas Storage Tanks Beyond Their Design Life

The air compressor receiver tank is a pressure vessel that operates continuously under cyclic loading and high-pressure conditions. Once it exceeds its design life, the equipment’s overall performance degrades significantly, posing non‑negligible safety risks.

  • Material Aging and Metal Fatigue:Prolonged exposure to pressure fluctuations can induce microcracks in the tank’s steel. Continued operation beyond its design life accelerates metal fatigue, increasing the risk of tank rupture or even explosion.
  • Corrosion thinning:Compressed air typically contains moisture and impurities, which, if allowed to accumulate at the bottom of the tank over time, can cause corrosion of the inner walls. The longer the tank is in service, the more pronounced the wall thinning becomes, significantly reducing its pressure‑carrying capacity.
  • Aging of safety accessories:Safety valves, pressure gauges, and other accessories also have their own service lives and calibration intervals. Equipment that has exceeded its intended lifespan is often accompanied by aging of these components, which may result in the inability to relieve excess pressure in a timely manner.

Regulations and Inspection Requirements for Special Equipment

As a type of special equipment, gas storage tanks are subject to strict oversight by national safety technical regulations throughout their manufacturing, operation, and inspection. For pressure vessels that have reached their design service life, the relevant regulations prescribe clear disposal requirements.

Typically, the design life of a gas storage tank is 10 or 15 years, as specified on the equipment nameplate and in the design documentation. When the equipment reaches its design life, the user shall submit an application to a qualified special‑equipment inspection agency for a comprehensive inspection. Gas storage tanks that have not been inspected or that fail inspection must not be put back into service.

The Proper Disposal Method for Overdue Gas Tanks

In the face of gas storage tanks that have exceeded their design life, enterprises should not rely on luck and must implement compliant remedial measures based on inspection results.

  • Application for Extension of Use:If the comprehensive inspection confirms that the vessel is in good condition and all relevant parameters meet safety requirements, the inspection agency will issue a report authorizing continued service and specify the next inspection interval. The user shall, on the strength of this report, apply to the special equipment safety supervision and administration authority for an amendment to the equipment use registration certificate.
  • Scrapping and Replacement:If the inspection reveals severe corrosion, cracks, or a wall thickness below the safety threshold, the equipment shall be deemed non‑conforming. In such cases, it must be immediately taken out of service, subjected to destructive scrapping, and replaced with a new gas storage tank that complies with the latest national standards.

Recommendations for Routine Maintenance and Safety Management

To extend the actual safe service life of gas storage tanks and ensure compliance, enterprises should carry out the following tasks in their day-to-day operations:

  • Establish a comprehensive equipment ledger:Maintain detailed records of the gas storage tank’s factory information, design life, all inspection reports, and maintenance records, and plan in advance for its scheduled inspections or replacement upon expiration.
  • Standardize daily inspections and wastewater discharge:Operators shall inspect the pressure gauge and safety valve daily, and periodically open the drain valve to remove accumulated water and oil sludge from the tank bottom, thereby mitigating internal wall corrosion.
  • Strictly prohibit unauthorized modifications:Unauthorized welding, drilling, or modification of the set pressure of safety accessories on gas storage tanks is prohibited. Any such modifications must be carried out by a qualified entity.
