Does the air compressor need to be shut off during firefighting?

I. Why is it necessary to shut down the air compressor during firefighting?

When faced with a fire drill or an unexpected fire,The air compressor must be shut down promptly.During operation, air compressors generate high temperatures and contain lubricating oil and compressed air.   • Emergency Shutdown: Immediately press the emergency stop button on the air compressor control panel to bring the equipment to an immediate halt.
  • Cut off the main power supply.: On the premise of ensuring your own safety, switch off the main power supply to the air compressor to completely cut off the electrical supply and prevent the spread of electrical fires.
  • Exhaust pressure reliefIf conditions permit and the environment is safe, open the vent valves on the gas storage tank and pipelines to release the high-pressure gas inside the system and reduce the equipment pressure.
  • Isolation gas source: Close the air supply valve at the air compressor outlet to isolate the air compressor from the plant’s entire pneumatic piping network, thereby preventing firefighting water or hazardous gases from backflowing into the production system.

III. Recommendations for Daily Fire Safety Management and Equipment Maintenance

To ensure that the air compressor can be shut down quickly and safely in an emergency, enterprises should implement robust daily management practices:

  • Improve the emergency response plan.Integrate the air compressor’s emergency shutdown procedure into the enterprise’s comprehensive fire‑response emergency plan, clearly defining the responsible personnel and specific operating procedures.
  • Conduct regular drills.: Organize fire‑emergency drills for equipment operators to ensure that every employee is proficient in the emergency stop and power‑off procedures for the air compressor.
  • Keep the environment clean.: Flammable and explosive materials are strictly prohibited from being stored in the air compressor room. Ensure adequate ventilation, and regularly clean oil and dust from equipment surfaces to minimize fire hazards at the source.

Proper fire‑safety procedures for air compressors not only protect the equipment itself but also serve as a critical safeguard for overall production safety. Only by rigorously adhering to established safety protocols can potential risks be effectively prevented and mitigated.
