The self-cooling requirements of the air-cooled dryer

High‑temperature air‑cooled desiccant dryers are designed with an integrated air‑cooling system. Their core heat‑dissipation components are the air‑cooled condenser and the pre‑cooler, which use built‑in or external fans to force air circulation, thereby removing heat from the compressed air and the refrigerant. Therefore,As for the air-cooled refrigerant dryer alone, it requires no connection to a circulating water system for cooling.This is also the primary reason why air-cooled equipment is widely favored in areas with water scarcity or poor water quality.

The key factor determining whether the entire system requires recirculating water.

Although air‑cooled refrigerant dryers do not require a circulating water system, determining whether the entire compressed‑air station should be equipped with such a system still requires evaluating the following two key aspects:

  • Cooling method of the air compressor host:If the air compressor at the front end is water-cooled, its main compression chamber and lubricant cooler must rely on circulating water for heat dissipation. In this case, a circulating water system is indispensable. If, on the other hand, the air compressor at the front end is air-cooled, the main unit likewise does not require a circulating water system.
  • Types of front-mounted and rear-mounted coolers:Under certain high-temperature operating conditions, the compressed air from the compressor first passes through a separate aftercooler to reduce its temperature before entering the refrigerant dryer. If the aftercooler is water-cooled, a circulating water supply is required; if it is air-cooled, no circulating water is needed.

Precautions for the Use of High-Temperature Air-Cooled Refrigerant Dryers

When the air compressor directly discharges high-temperature gas and is connected to a high-temperature air-cooled refrigerant dryer, the system’s thermal load is substantial. To ensure drying performance and equipment longevity, the following points should be observed:

  • Ambient Temperature Control:Air-cooled equipment is sensitive to ambient temperature. The air compressor room must be well-ventilated; if necessary, install exhaust fans or ducting to prevent hot air from recirculating indoors and triggering high-pressure alarms on the refrigerant dryer.
  • Intake air temperature limit:Although it is referred to as a high-temperature desiccant dryer, its allowable inlet air temperature still has an upper limit. If the compressor’s discharge temperature consistently exceeds this limit, a cooling device must still be installed upstream.
  • Radiator Cleaning:The fins of air-cooled condensers are prone to accumulating dust and oil, so they should be cleaned regularly with compressed air or a neutral cleaning agent to maintain optimal heat-transfer efficiency.

Recommendations for Choosing Between Air-Cooling and Water-Cooling Systems

When designing a compressed air system, the choice between air cooling and water cooling should be based on the specific operating conditions.

  • Air-cooling system:It is suitable for small to medium-sized gas‑handling applications in areas with limited water resources, hard water, or a tendency for freezing during winter. Its advantages include simple installation and the absence of need for water‑treatment equipment; however, it requires adequate ventilation in the machine room.
  • Water-cooling system:Suitable for plants with large air volumes, continuous high‑load operation, and ample water resources. Water‑cooled systems offer greater operational stability, are less affected by ambient temperature, and enable the recycling of water through cooling towers; however, their initial capital investment and maintenance costs are relatively higher.
