How do you determine the air consumption of a slow-wire EDM machine?

Basic Composition of Air Consumption in Slow-Wire EDM Machines

In wire EDM machining, compressed air is primarily used for drying workpieces, cleaning the machine’s interior, and actuating pneumatic fixtures or pneumatic doors, among other auxiliary functions. Identifying these specific air‑consumption points is essential for accurately determining the total air demand.

View device technical specifications

The most straightforward way to determine air consumption is to consult the machine tool’s factory‑issued technical manual. Equipment manufacturers typically specify the machine’s standard air consumption and the minimum required working pressure in the parameter table. These figures serve as the key baseline data for calculating total demand.

Calculation of Auxiliary Equipment and Piping Losses

In addition to the wear and tear of the machine tool itself, it is also necessary to account for the consumption of other pneumatic tools and piping within the workshop.

  • Auxiliary tool air consumptionIf manual air blow guns are used concurrently in the workshop to clean workstations, their rated air consumption must be included in the total demand.
  • Pipeline loss: During pipeline transmission, compressed air experiences pressure drops and minor leaks. It is generally recommended to add a margin to the theoretical total volume to account for pipeline losses.

Select an air compressor with the appropriate specifications.

After determining the total air consumption, the following principles should be followed when selecting an air compressor:

  • Displacement matchingThe air compressor’s rated displacement should exceed the total air consumption of the machine tools and auxiliary equipment, ensuring that the supply pressure does not drop during peak demand.
  • Pressure stableWire EDM machines have stringent requirements for air‑pressure stability; it is recommended to equip them with an air‑storage tank and a precision filter to dampen pressure fluctuations and remove moisture and contaminants from the air, thereby ensuring machining accuracy.
