Requirements for the Location and Layout of Exhaust Vents

The location of the overhead exhaust vent in the air compressor room directly affects the indoor airflow pattern. The vent should be positioned as close as possible above the area with the highest heat dissipation from the compressors, leveraging the stack effect to achieve natural ventilation. At the same time, the exhaust vent must be located away from the fresh-air intake to prevent short-circuiting and backflow of the exhausted hot air. During layout, adequate clearance should be maintained between the exhaust vent and surrounding obstructions to ensure unobstructed airflow.

Matching the exhaust vent size to the airflow rate

The area of the exhaust vent must be matched to the air compressor’s heat dissipation and the ventilation requirements of the equipment room. The following factors should be taken into account during design:

  • Total Exhaust Airflow Calculation: Based on the air compressor’s shaft power, motor efficiency, and the maximum allowable ambient temperature in the machine room, accurately calculate the required total exhaust airflow.
  • Wind speed controlThe exhaust air velocity at the top-mounted vent is typically maintained within an appropriate range; excessively high velocities increase system resistance and generate significant noise, while velocities that are too low may result in inadequate exhaust airflow.
  • Effective areaConsidering the obstruction caused by rain‑proof louvers or protective screens, the actual effective ventilation area of the exhaust outlet should be greater than the theoretically calculated area; typically, it must be multiplied by an appropriate reduction factor.

Protection, rainproofing, and dustproofing design

Since the top-mounted exhaust vent is directly exposed to the outdoor environment, it must possess robust protective performance:

  • Rainproof louversThe exterior of the exhaust vent shall be fitted with rain‑proof louvers, whose tilt angle and spacing must be optimized to prevent rainwater from backflowing into the equipment room during heavy rainfall.
  • Insect- and bird-proof netting: Install a metal protective mesh on the inner side of the louvers to prevent birds, insects, leaves, and other debris from entering the exhaust ductwork or the equipment room.
  • Anti-corrosion treatmentThe materials and fasteners of the exhaust vent shall be treated with anti-corrosion and anti-rust coatings to withstand harsh outdoor climatic conditions and extend service life.

Noise Control and Environmental Protection Requirements

The operation of air compressors generates significant aerodynamic noise, and the top exhaust vent is a major pathway for sound propagation. To meet environmental protection requirements, effective noise reduction measures must be implemented:

  • Silencing Louver: Install sound‑attenuating louvers at the exhaust outlet and use sound‑absorbing materials to reduce mid‑ and high‑frequency noise.
  • Silenced Static Pressure BoxFor areas with stringent noise requirements, a silencing plenum or silencer can be installed beneath the exhaust outlet to further attenuate low-frequency noise.
  • Shock-absorbing design: Flexible joints and vibration-isolating hangers shall be installed at the connections between exhaust ductwork and the building structure to prevent solid-borne noise transmission.
