Sources and Formation of Wastewater from Air Compressors
Air compressors are widely used in industrial production, and their operation requires both cooling water and lubricating oil. During condensation, cooling, and oil–gas separation, moisture in the air mixes with the lubricating oil, ultimately forming oily wastewater. In addition, a certain amount of waste liquid is generated during equipment cleaning and maintenance. These wastewaters are not simply natural water; they have undergone complex physical and chemical transformations.
Main components of wastewater from air compressors
The reason compressed-air‑system wastewater is strictly classified as industrial wastewater lies in its complex chemical composition. Its principal pollutants include:
- Mineral oil and synthetic oil: The lubrication system from the compressor contains a large amount of hydrocarbons.
- Heavy metals and metallic particulates: Metal debris such as iron and copper generated by equipment wear is suspended in the water.
- Chemical additive: Chemical substances such as antioxidants, rust inhibitors, and extreme-pressure additives contained in lubricating oil.
- Suspended solids and emulsions: A stable emulsion formed by the mixing of oil and water, which is difficult to separate naturally.
Why is it classified as industrial wastewater?
According to relevant environmental protection standards, industrial wastewater refers to water containing pollutants generated during industrial production processes. Air compressor wastewater fully meets this definition, for the following reasons:
1. High pollution concentration
The chemical oxygen demand and petroleum‑related compounds in wastewater typically far exceed the tolerance limits of domestic sewage and natural water bodies. If discharged directly, they can deplete dissolved oxygen in the water, leading to severe deterioration of water quality.
2. Toxic and hazardous
Certain chemical additives and heavy metal ions in wastewater are toxic to aquatic organisms and soil microorganisms. Their long-term accumulation can disrupt ecological balance and, through the food chain, even jeopardize human health.
3. High processing difficulty
Due to severe oil–water emulsification, conventional physical sedimentation is ineffective. Specialized industrial wastewater treatment processes—such as demulsification, dissolved air flotation, and biochemical treatment—must be employed to meet discharge standards.
Compliant Handling and Environmental Protection Requirements
Given the industrial wastewater nature of air compressor effluent, enterprises must strictly comply with environmental protection regulations during treatment. Typically, a dedicated collection system is required to consolidate the wastewater before handing it over to a qualified third-party environmental service provider for treatment, or establishing in-house wastewater treatment facilities that meet applicable standards. It is strictly prohibited to discharge such wastewater into stormwater networks or directly into municipal sewage treatment systems, to prevent environmental pollution incidents.
