Air Compressor Startup Procedure and Precautions

Preparations Before Power-On

Before starting the air compressor, a thorough inspection must be conducted to ensure the equipment is in proper standby condition, thereby preventing equipment damage or safety incidents caused by inadequate preparation.

  • Check the lubricant level.: Verify that the lubricating oil level in the oil–gas separator is within the normal range. If the oil level is insufficient, add the same‑specification, dedicated lubricant; never mix different types of oil.
  • Inspect pipelines and valves: Verify that the exhaust piping is unobstructed and that the exhaust valve is fully open. Inspect all connections for looseness, air leaks, or oil leaks.
  • Check the cooling systemFor water-cooled air compressors, the cooling water circulation system must be started in advance, and the water pressure and temperature should be checked to ensure they are within normal ranges. For air-cooled units, it is essential to verify that the cooler’s heat‑dissipating fins are not severely clogged.
  • Inspect the electrical system: Verify that the supply voltage is within the equipment’s allowable fluctuation range, that the grounding wire is securely connected, and that all indicator lights on the control panel are functioning normally.

Standard Boot Process

After completing the preliminary checks, operators must follow the steps below precisely to start up the equipment and ensure a smooth startup.

  • Jog testFor equipment that has been idle for an extended period or installed for the first time, it is recommended to perform a brief jog operation first to verify that the motor’s rotation direction matches the arrow indicated on the equipment.
  • Start the host: Press the start button on the control panel, and the equipment will enter either reduced-voltage starting or variable-frequency soft-start mode. At this point, carefully listen for smooth operation of the main unit, checking for any abnormal friction or sharp noises.
  • No-load operation: After the equipment is started, it typically runs at no load for several minutes. During this time, monitor whether the lubricating oil pressure rises rapidly to the normal range and verify that the oil temperature gradually increases.
  • Loading gas supplyWhen no-load operation is normal and the system pressure reaches the set lower limit, the equipment will automatically or manually switch to loaded mode and begin delivering compressed air to the pipeline network.

Precautions During Operation

Even after the equipment has entered normal operating conditions, operators must remain vigilant, conduct regular inspections, and record critical operational data.

  • Monitor core parameters: Closely monitor exhaust temperature, exhaust pressure, lubricating oil pressure, and motor current. If the exhaust temperature exceeds the set high‑temperature alarm threshold, promptly investigate the cooling system or the oil circuit for any issues.
  • Monitor for abnormal vibrations and noise.: If, during operation, you notice increased机组 vibration or irregular unusual noises, immediately press the emergency stop button, disconnect the power supply, and contact qualified maintenance personnel for inspection.
  • Keep the environment well-ventilated.: Air compressors generate substantial heat during operation; therefore, the compressor room must maintain adequate ventilation and cooling to prevent excessively high ambient temperatures that could trigger high-temperature shutdowns.
  • Regularly drain condensate water.: Depending on ambient humidity and gas consumption, periodically open the drain valves at the bottom of the gas storage tank and the oil–gas separator to discharge accumulated condensate, thereby preventing moisture from entering the gas distribution network.

Standardized Shutdown and Routine Maintenance

Proper shutdown procedures and routine maintenance are essential for ensuring the long-term, stable operation of air compressors.

  • Normal shutdown: Avoid directly disconnecting the power supply whenever possible. First, press the stop button to allow the equipment to run under no‑load conditions for a period of time, and only after the internal pressure has been relieved and the temperature has dropped should the motor be automatically stopped.
  • Emergency Shutdown: The emergency stop button shall be used only in the event of a severe oil or gas leak, an abnormal loud noise, or an emergency that poses a threat to personal safety.
  • Regular maintenance: In strict accordance with the equipment maintenance manual, regularly replace the air filter element, oil filter, oil–gas separator element, and lubricating oil to ensure the equipment consistently operates under optimal conditions.
