The Necessity of Drainage in the Air Compressor Room

During the compression of air, an air compressor condenses the water vapor in the air into liquid water. If this condensed water is not drained promptly, it can severely impact the data center environment and equipment operation.

  • Equipment Corrosion and Damage: Prolonged water accumulation can cause corrosion of the compressor and its auxiliary equipment bases, thereby shortening the service life of the equipment.
  • Electrical safety hazards: Data centers typically house numerous electrical control cabinets and cables, and accumulated water can cause short circuits or even electric shock accidents.
  • Impact on air qualityA humid environment is conducive to bacterial growth; if moisture enters the piping network with compressed air, it can degrade the quality of the air at the point of use.

Key Design Considerations for Drainage Systems

To ensure the smooth drainage of condensate and any potential leakage, the drainage design for the compressed air room must comply with the following standards:

  • Properly design drainage ditches.Drainage channels shall be installed around major equipment such as air compressors, air receivers, and refrigerant dryers, and routed to a sump or the outdoor drainage network.
  • Ground Slope DesignThe data center floor shall be sloped appropriately toward the drainage ditch to ensure natural water runoff and prevent localized pooling.
  • Non-slip and corrosion-resistant materialDrainage channel covers should be made of slip-resistant, load-bearing, and corrosion-resistant materials, such as steel grating or fiberglass grating, to ensure pedestrian safety.

Environmental Protection and Oil-Water Separation Requirements

Condensate discharged from air compressors typically contains trace amounts of lubricating oil. Discharging it directly not only pollutes the environment but may also violate applicable environmental regulations.

Therefore, additional measures should be incorporated into the drainage system.Oil-water separatorAlternatively, a centralized waste oil collection system may be employed. Condensate is subjected to oil–water separation and, once it meets discharge standards, is discharged into the plant’s wastewater network; the separated waste oil, meanwhile, must be handed over to a specialized agency for recovery and treatment.

Daily Maintenance and Management Recommendations

A well-designed drainage system can achieve its full potential only when paired with sound daily management practices:

  • Regularly clean the drainage ditches.: Prevent sediment and debris from clogging the drainage channels, especially in server rooms operating in dusty environments.
  • Inspect the automatic drain valve.: Regularly test the automatic drain valves on gas storage tanks and filters to ensure they operate promptly and drain smoothly.
  • Winter Freeze-Protection MeasuresIn cold regions, outdoor drainage pipes and sumps must be properly insulated and protected against freezing to prevent pipe rupture and subsequent failure of the drainage system.
