  • Air storage tank (air receiver tank)This is the most typical and common type of pressure vessel found in air compressor rooms. Its primary functions are to dampen pressure fluctuations, store compressed air, and allow moisture to settle out. Because it operates under relatively high internal gas pressures and typically has a large volume, the air receiver tank is strictly classified as a stationary pressure vessel.
  • Oil-gas separatorIn oil-injected screw air compressor systems, the oil–gas separator is used to separate lubricating oil from the compressed air. Its operating pressure and volume often meet the regulatory thresholds for special equipment, classifying it as a pressure vessel.
  • Refrigerant dryer and filter housing: For certain large freeze‑drying units or precision filters, if the product of their design pressure and volume meets the relevant standards specified in the catalog of special equipment, they shall likewise be classified as pressure vessels.

Statutory Regulatory Standards for Pressure Vessels

Not all pressurized equipment falls under the category of “special equipment” subject to statutory regulation. To determine whether equipment in an air compressor room qualifies as a regulated pressure vessel, it generally must simultaneously meet the following three basic conditions:

  • Work stress: Maximum working pressure is greater than or equal to 0. 1MPa (Gauge pressure).
  • Volume and Dimensions: Volume greater than or equal to 0. 03m³ and the inner diameter (for non-circular cross-sections, the maximum geometric dimension of the inner boundary of the cross-section) is greater than or equal to 150 mm.
  • Medium characteristics: The contained medium is a gas, a liquefied gas, or a liquid with a maximum operating temperature equal to or higher than its standard boiling point.

The air receiver tanks and oil–gas separators in the compressor room generally fully meet the aforementioned requirements; therefore, they must be brought under the special equipment safety supervision system for management.

Safety Management Requirements for Pressure Vessels in Compressor Rooms

Since compressor rooms involve pressure vessels, companies must strictly adhere to relevant safety management regulations in their daily operations to mitigate potential safety risks.

  • Registration and InspectionBefore a pressure vessel is put into service or within the prescribed time after it has been put into service, it must undergo usage registration with the special equipment safety supervision and administration authority. In addition, it is required to submit periodic declarations and undergo regular inspections by a qualified inspection agency.
  • Safety Accessory VerificationSafety valves, pressure gauges, and other safety accessories on equipment such as gas storage tanks constitute the final line of defense against overpressure incidents. These components must undergo regular calibration and verification to ensure their reliable operation and accurate readings.
  • Personnel Qualifications and TrainingOperators of pressure vessels and persons responsible for safety management must undergo specialized training and obtain the relevant special equipment operator certificates before taking up their posts.
  • Daily Inspection and Maintenance: Establish a comprehensive routine inspection system, with particular attention to checking for deformation or leakage of the vessel body, ensuring that safety accessories are in good condition, and verifying that drain valves are regularly used to discharge accumulated water.

The air compressor room not only involves pressure vessels, but these devices are also critical to ensuring the stable operation of the entire compressed‑air system. Enterprises should maintain a detailed equipment register, clearly identifying which equipment falls under the scope of special‑equipment regulation, and rigorously comply with statutory requirements for registration, inspection, certification of personnel, and routine maintenance. By implementing sound and rigorous safety management, companies can both ensure production continuity and effectively mitigate safety risks and compliance hazards.
