Requirements and Standards for Compressor Room Design

Air compressors are core power‑driving equipment in industrial production, and the compliance of their compressor room design directly impacts operational efficiency, service life, and overall production safety. A scientifically sound and well‑planned compressor room can effectively reduce failure rates and lower energy consumption. The following outlines the key requirements and standards for designing an air compressor room.

Site Selection and Building Requirements

The location of the air compressor room should be determined by comprehensively considering environmental factors and production layout, ensuring that the equipment operates in an optimal physical environment.

  • Environmental cleanliness:The computer room should be located away from dust, corrosive gases, and flammable or explosive materials to prevent contaminants from being drawn into the equipment, which could cause wear and tear or lead to safety incidents.
  • Space reservation:The data center space must accommodate the requirements for equipment installation, daily operations, and future maintenance. Sufficient access aisles should be provided around all equipment and above the ceiling; it is generally recommended to maintain a minimum clearance of at least 1 meter from walls and other equipment.
  • Ground Load-Bearing Capacity and Seismic Resistance:The floor shall be level and stable, with adequate load-bearing capacity. For large air compressors, a separate concrete foundation must be provided, and effective vibration‑isolating measures shall be implemented to prevent vibration transmission from compromising the building structure.

Ventilation and Heat Dissipation Design

During operation, air compressors generate substantial heat; a robust ventilation and cooling system is essential for ensuring stable equipment performance.

  • Natural and mechanical ventilation combined:The computer room shall be equipped with air inlets and outlets of adequate size. When natural ventilation fails to meet cooling requirements, forced‑draft ventilation equipment, such as axial fans, must be installed.
  • Airflow Organization:The air intake should be located at the lower part of the equipment room or on the cooler, shaded side, while the exhaust vent should be positioned at the upper part of the room or on the equipment’s heat‑dissipation side, establishing proper airflow and preventing hot air from recirculating and creating a short circuit within the space.
  • Ambient Temperature Control:The ambient temperature in the equipment room should generally be maintained between 5°C and 40°C. During the summer, temperature monitoring must be closely prioritized, and cooling systems should be added as needed to prevent equipment shutdowns caused by high temperatures.

Pipeline Layout and Installation Code

A well‑designed piping system not only minimizes pressure loss but also reduces the risk of leaks and lowers maintenance costs.

  • Pipe Material Selection:Compressed air pipelines shall be made of pressure‑resistant, corrosion‑resistant materials, such as seamless steel pipe, stainless steel pipe, or dedicated aluminum alloy piping. The use of non‑standard flexible hoses that are prone to aging and rupture is strictly prohibited for main lines.
  • Orientation and Slope:Piping should be laid out as short and straight as possible, minimizing the number of bends and valves. The main pipeline must maintain a proper slope, and an automatic drain valve should be installed at the lowest point to ensure timely removal of condensate.
  • Support and Fixation:Piping must be securely fastened using dedicated pipe clamps and supports to prevent pipe vibration and joint loosening caused by airflow pulsations.

Electrical Systems and Safety Protection

The safety and reliability of the electrical system are paramount in air compressor room management.

  • Distribution Code:An independent distribution cabinet must be provided for the air compressor, equipped with appropriate circuit breakers, contactors, and thermal relays. The cable cross-sectional area shall be rigorously calculated based on the equipment’s power rating and the supply distance, ensuring that voltage drop remains within acceptable limits.
  • Grounding protection:The metal enclosures of all electrical equipment, cable trays, and piping systems must be reliably grounded, and the grounding resistance shall comply with national electrical safety standards.
  • Safety Sign:The equipment room shall display conspicuous safety operating procedures, warning signs, and equipment status indicator panels; unauthorized personnel are strictly prohibited from operating the equipment.

Environmental Protection and Noise Reduction Measures

The noise and emissions generated during compressor operation must comply with environmental regulations to improve the working environment and prevent public disturbance.

  • Noise Control:The server room’s walls and ceiling may be finished with sound-absorbing materials. For high-noise equipment, soundproof enclosures can be installed, or silencers can be fitted at the air intake and exhaust vents, ensuring that noise emissions outside the server room comply with applicable environmental standards.
  • Waste Oil and Wastewater Treatment:Condensate from air compressors contains trace amounts of lubricating oil and must not be discharged directly. An oil–water separator or a centralized collection system must be installed, and the collected condensate must be handed over to a qualified organization for environmentally sound treatment.

Strict adherence to the installation requirements and standards for air compressor rooms is fundamental to ensuring the continuity and safety of industrial production. When planning and constructing such facilities, enterprises should take into account actual operating conditions, implement all relevant technical standards, and create optimal conditions for the efficient operation of equipment.
