  • Low oil temperature and condensate accumulation:Screw compressors require a certain operating time to bring the lubricating oil up to its optimal working temperature. This can easily lead to emulsification of the lubricant, reducing its lubrication performance and accelerating component corrosion.
  • Mechanical and electrical shocks caused by frequent start–stop cycles:Prolonged operation in a “cold‑start” condition imposes significant stress on the motor, contactors, and the host machine’s bearings, thereby shortening the service life of electrical components and mechanical seals.
  • Poor energy consumption and operational efficiency:Screw compressors consume relatively high energy during startup and load‑up. Operating for short periods means the equipment spends most of its time in a high‑energy transitional phase, preventing it from realizing the energy‑saving benefits it offers under stable, full‑load operation.

Alternative solutions more suitable for this operating condition

In response to the demand for prolonged shutdowns followed by short-term, concentrated gas consumption, the following solution is recommended:

  • Piston air compressor:Piston compressors are better suited to intermittent operation and frequent start–stop cycles, feature a relatively simple design, and incur lower maintenance costs, making them ideal for applications with low usage frequency and short operating durations.
  • Increase the gas storage tank capacity:By installing a larger‑capacity air receiver tank, more compressed air can be stored while the compressor is running. This not only extends the duration of each operating cycle but also further reduces the frequency of compressor startups, thereby mitigating pressure fluctuations caused by intermittent air consumption.

Optimization recommendations if a screw compressor must be used

If the site environment has extremely stringent noise requirements, or if other constraints necessitate the use of a screw-type air compressor, the following optimization measures are recommended:

  • Enhance condensate drainage:It is essential to ensure that the automatic drain operates properly, or to manually drain the condensate from the oil‑gas separator and the air receiver tank after each shutdown, to prevent moisture from entering the lubrication system.
  • Shorten the maintenance interval:Due to prolonged low oil temperatures, the performance of the lubricant and the oil‑separator element may degrade more rapidly. It is recommended to shorten the replacement intervals for consumables as appropriate, based on actual operating conditions.
  • Optimize control parameters:Properly configure the controller’s hysteresis for sleep and wake‑up thresholds to prevent unnecessary, frequent cycling of the equipment within a 10‑minute operating cycle.
