How to address severe moisture in an air compressor?

First, determine the source of the moisture.

The air drawn into an air compressor inherently contains water vapor; after compression, its temperature rises, and during subsequent cooling, storage, and delivery, it readily condenses into liquid water. If significant water accumulation is observed at the system’s downstream end, it is usually not due to a single factor but rather the combined effect of drainage, drying, filtration, and pipeline maintenance.

Inspect the gas storage tank and the drainage device.

  • Regular blowdown:A stable drainage schedule should be established at the bottom of the gas storage tank to prevent condensed water from accumulating over time and being carried into the pipeline network by the gas flow.
  • Inspect the automatic drain:If the automatic drain becomes clogged, stuck, or malfunctions, water will not be discharged promptly. In such cases, check whether drainage is smooth and clean the filter screen.
  • Confirm the installation location:The low points of gas storage tanks and filters shall be designed for easy drainage to prevent the formation of stagnant water pockets.

Assess whether the dryer is suitable for the operating conditions.

If the compressed air has stringent moisture‑content requirements, relying solely on condensate drainage from the air receiver is usually insufficient; a drying unit should be installed or the existing equipment should be inspected.

  • Refrigerated dryer:Suitable for typical dehumidification applications; attention should be paid to the condenser’s heat dissipation, whether drainage is functioning properly, and whether the temperature difference between the inlet and outlet is abnormal.
  • Dehydrator:Suitable for applications with lower pressure dew point requirements; attention should be paid to the regeneration process, valve operation, and desiccant condition.
  • Throughput Matching:The dryer’s processing capacity should be matched to the actual exhaust flow rate, pressure, and temperature conditions to prevent prolonged operation under overload.

Improve filter and pipeline design

  • Pre- and post-filtration:Installing appropriate filters upstream and downstream of the dryer helps minimize the interference of oil mist, dust, and liquid water with downstream processing equipment.
  • Pipeline slope:Horizontal piping shall be installed with an appropriate slope and equipped with drain points at low points to minimize the accumulation of condensate.
  • Avoid blind spots:Excessively long branch lines, an excessive number of dead ends, or abrupt changes in pipe diameter can all increase the risk of condensate accumulation.

Daily Maintenance Recommendations

To address the severe moisture issue in air compressors, it is recommended to troubleshoot in the following sequence: drain first, then dry, followed by filtration and pipeline inspection. During maintenance, record the frequency of drainage, dew point fluctuations, and filter element replacement intervals to facilitate identification of fault trends. If the downstream equipment has specific requirements for dryness, establish inspection criteria based on process conditions rather than relying solely on visual assessment to determine the presence of water.
