What happens if an air compressor is left unused for a long time?

The main potential impacts of prolonged disuse

If an air compressor remains idle for an extended period, it will not stay in perfect condition simply because it is not in use. The internal lubricants, seals, piping, air receiver tanks, and electrical components can all be affected by ambient humidity, temperature fluctuations, and dust accumulation. The longer the equipment is out of service, the higher the likelihood of malfunctions upon restart.

The condition of the lubricating oil may deteriorate.

After an air compressor has been left idle for an extended period, the lubricating oil may undergo oxidation, changes in viscosity, or the accumulation of impurities. If moisture or metallic particles remain in the oil circuit, they can further compromise lubrication performance. Before restarting the unit, a thorough inspection should be conducted, with particular attention to:Oil level, oil color, and oil condition, replace as required by the maintenance procedures when necessary.

Condensation can cause rust.

Condensation is prone to form in compressed air systems. If the system is not drained promptly before shutdown, the air receiver tank, piping, and valve bodies may remain damp for extended periods, increasing the risk of corrosion and blockages. Before restarting, verify that the drain devices are functioning properly and perform thorough draining of the air receiver tank and piping.

Seals and rubber components are prone to aging.

Prolonged inactivity can leave certain seals under static compressive stress, and rubber components may harden, shrink, or lose elasticity due to environmental factors. Such issues can lead to air leaks, oil seepage, or pressure instability. Before commissioning, inspect joints, hoses, valves, and connection points for any abnormalities.

The electrical system may be damp or have poor connections.

If the air compressor is stored in a humid environment, electrical components, terminal blocks, and control parts may become damp, leading to reduced insulation performance or poor contact. Before re‑energizing, verify that the power supply lines, control cabinet, pushbuttons, and instruments are functioning properly to prevent startup under fault conditions.

What checks are recommended before restarting?

  • Check the oil level and the condition of the lubricant to determine whether replenishment or replacement is required.
  • Clean or inspect the air filter element to prevent dust from entering the compression chamber.
  • Drain the condensate from the gas storage tank and piping.
  • Check that the pressure gauge, safety valve, and relief device are functioning properly.
  • Inspect the piping, fittings, and valves for air leaks or seepage.
  • First conduct a short no-load trial run, then gradually restore the load.

How to mitigate the risks associated with long-term inactivity

If the air compressor is to remain out of service for an extended period, it is recommended to perform a basic maintenance check before shutdown, including cleaning the equipment, draining condensate, inspecting the oil system and filters, and storing the unit in a dry, well-ventilated, low-dust environment. If conditions permit, periodically start the equipment for short intervals to circulate the lubricating oil and remove moisture, thereby reducing the risk of component corrosion and seal degradation.

Usage recommendations to keep in mind

When restarting an air compressor, it is not recommended to immediately put it under load. First, observe whether the start-up process is smooth, paying close attention to changes in noise, vibration, temperature, and pressure. If any significant unusual noises, abnormal vibrations, air leaks, alarms, or pressure anomalies occur, stop the machine for inspection and resume operation only after confirming that everything is normal.
