Is an air compressor a pressure vessel?

The Relationship Between Air Compressors and Pressure Vessels

Air compressors are primarily used to compress air and deliver compressed air; they are themselves power‑driven devices. Whether an air compressor is subject to pressure vessel regulations cannot be determined solely by its name; rather, it depends on whether the equipment contains a pressurized shell, a gas storage chamber, and whether it meets the local criteria for classification as a pressure vessel.

Which components may be classified as pressure vessels?

  • Gas storage tank: Used for storing compressed air, it is a common pressure-bearing component in air compressor systems.
  • Oil-gas separation tank: Some oil-lubricated air compressors have pressure-bearing separation chambers inside.
  • Aftercooler, dryer, filter housing: If subjected to compressed air pressure, it may also be brought under the management of relevant pressurized equipment.

What are the criteria for making a judgment?

Typically, it can be determined from the following aspects:

  • The design pressure, volume, working medium, and intended use as indicated on the equipment nameplate.
  • Does the equipment’s structure include a closed pressure‑bearing shell?
  • Whether it falls within the scope of the local special equipment catalog or pressure vessel regulatory oversight.
  • Whether it is designed as a simple pressure vessel, a stationary pressure vessel, or another category.

Usage and Management Recommendations

For air compressors equipped with an air receiver tank, attention should be paid to safety accessories and routine maintenance:

  • Check whether the pressure gauge and safety valve are functioning properly.
  • Carry out drainage, wastewater discharge, and corrosion protection inspections as required.
  • It is prohibited to weld, drill holes in, or modify pressure-bearing components without authorization.
  • When severe rust, deformation, or leakage is detected, the equipment shall be taken out of service and inspected and repaired.

To determine whether a particular air compressor qualifies as a pressure vessel, it is recommended to assess the information provided on the equipment’s nameplate, the manufacturer’s technical documentation, and the applicable local regulations.
