How often should a screw compressor undergo a major overhaul?

Reference Standards for Regular Overhaul Intervals

In industrial production, there is no universally fixed standard for the overhaul cycle of screw compressors; however, based on common industry practice, it is generally recommended that, once the equipment has accumulated a certain number of operating hours…20,000 to 40,000 hours, or use continuously3 to 5 yearsA comprehensive overhaul will then be carried out. This maintenance interval is determined based on an assessment of the normal wear‑out life of the equipment’s critical internal components. Of course, the specific interval should be dynamically adjusted in light of actual operating conditions.

Key Factors Affecting the Overhaul Interval

The actual overhaul duration of a screw compressor often varies significantly due to the following factors:

  • Work environment:If the equipment is exposed for extended periods to high-temperature, high-humidity, dusty, or corrosive-gas environments, the wear and aging of its internal components will accelerate significantly, necessitating an earlier overhaul schedule.
  • Daily maintenance quality:Replacing consumables such as lubricating oil, oil filters, and air filters at prescribed intervals can effectively reduce wear on the main unit. Equipment that is inadequately maintained will require major overhauls much sooner.
  • Operating load and start–stop frequency:Prolonged operation under overload conditions or frequent start–stop cycles increases mechanical shock and thermal stress, accelerates fatigue damage, and thereby shortens the overhaul interval.

Important warning signs before a major overhaul

In addition to referring to the scheduled operating time, operators should pay close attention to any changes in the equipment’s operating condition. When any of the following situations occur, an immediate shutdown for inspection and overhaul assessment should be arranged, even if the regular overhaul interval has not yet been reached:

  • Abnormal Vibration and Noise:The host’s operating sound becomes muffled, or sharp scraping noises appear, and the degree of chassis vibration increases noticeably.
  • Abnormally high temperature:Exhaust temperature or bearing temperature remains persistently high, and the conventional cooling system is unable to effectively reduce it.
  • Significant increase in energy consumption:Under identical operating conditions, the equipment’s power consumption increases significantly, while gas production or output power decreases.
  • Excessive lubricant consumption:Frequent oil leakage and oil loss occur, and the rate of oil degradation has accelerated abnormally.

Maintenance Recommendations for Scientifically Extending Equipment Lifespan

To maximize the overhaul interval of screw compressors and reduce operating costs, the following preventive maintenance measures are recommended:

  • Establish a comprehensive maintenance record:Record the date of each maintenance service, the parts replaced, and operating parameters in detail, and use data analysis to predict potential failures.
  • Maintain a clean and organized server room environment:Ensure adequate ventilation in the equipment room, and regularly clean dust from the heat sinks and motor surfaces to prevent overheating of the equipment.
  • Use qualified, certified consumables:Avoid using low-quality lubricants and filters to ensure proper lubrication and cleanliness of critical components at the source.
  • Standardize operational procedures:Train operators to start up and shut down equipment strictly in accordance with standard procedures, thereby preventing loaded starts and non‑compliant operations.
