How many cubic meters of air does an air compressor need to qualify as special equipment?

Core criteria: a dual threshold of volume and pressure.

In the regulatory framework for special equipment, determining whether an air compressor qualifies as special equipment does not depend solely on its displacement (in cubic meters), but rather on its associated components.Gas storage tank or pressure-bearing componentWhether it complies with the definitions set forth in relevant national safety technical standards. Many enterprises tend to confuse “displacement” with “container volume”; in practice, the key regulatory indicator isEffective volume ≥ 30 liters.

Statutory Classification Parameter Comparison

In accordance with the current Catalogue of Special Equipment and relevant technical specifications, compressed air storage vessels that simultaneously meet the following conditions shall be brought under the management of special equipment:

  • The medium is air, nitrogen, or other gases, or liquefied gases;
  • The design working pressure is greater than or equal to 0.1 MPa (gauge pressure);
  • With an inner diameter of 150 millimeters or greater, andVolume greater than or equal to 30 liters;
  • The product of working pressure and volume is greater than or equal to 2.5 megapascal-liters.

If the air displacement is only a few cubic meters or even several dozen cubic meters, but the air receiver tank has a capacity of less than 30 liters, it does not fall within the scope of special equipment. Conversely, even a small air compressor equipped with a large-capacity air receiver tank must, in accordance with the law, undergo registration and inspection procedures.

Differences in Management Between the Complete Machine and Pressure-Containing Components

The power unit of an air compressor—namely, the motor, screw compressor, or reciprocating compressor—is not itself a pressure vessel and therefore does not require inspection as special equipment. What is subject to regulatory oversight is the component within the system that serves to store pressurized air.Pressure-bearing components in the gas storage tank, aftercooler, and piping system. As long as the system contains pressurized components that meet the aforementioned parameters, the entire gas supply system shall be subject to the special equipment safety management requirements.

Key Points of Daily Compliance Management

  • Registration for Use:Within thirty days prior to or following commissioning, register the special equipment with the local market supervision authority.
  • Periodic inspection:Annual inspections and comprehensive examinations shall be conducted in accordance with the prescribed safety technical specifications, and operation beyond the prescribed service life is strictly prohibited.
  • Personnel Qualifications:Certified safety management personnel shall be assigned, and operators must be trained in basic emergency response procedures.
  • Archive Maintenance:Establish equipment technical dossiers, ensuring the complete retention of design documents, manufacturing supervision and inspection certificates, and records of all past maintenance and overhaul activities.

During the selection and procurement phases, enterprises should clearly specify the parameters of gas storage tanks to prevent compliance-related delays in production. For specific implementation standards, please refer to the latest announcements issued by the local market regulatory authorities.
