What will happen if the air tank next to the screw air compressor is not drained of water?

Factors affecting compressed air quality

Screw compressors generate substantial amounts of condensate during operation. If the downstream components—such as air receivers or moisture separators—are not drained promptly, this moisture will be carried into the downstream piping network along with the compressed air. This can lead to water accumulation inside pneumatic tools, control valves, and other air‑utilizing equipment, severely compromising product quality and even resulting in scrap.

Accelerates corrosion of pipelines and equipment

When moisture remains in cylinders and pipelines for extended periods, it can degrade the protective coatings on metal surfaces, giving rise to multiple potential hazards:

  • Internal rust:The cylinder bore and the downstream piping are prone to oxidation, forming rust that contaminates the compressed air.
  • Seal aging:Moisture may accelerate the aging and swelling of rubber seals, leading to frequent leaks in the pipeline network.
  • Shortened lifespan:Long-term corrosion can significantly reduce the service life of pipeline networks and gas‑using equipment, increasing enterprises’ maintenance and replacement costs.

Increased system energy consumption and failure rate

Water accumulation occupies the cylinder’s effective volume, reducing air‑storage efficiency and causing the compressor to cycle on and off more frequently. Moreover, if moisture enters downstream treatment equipment or the lubrication system with the airflow, it can cause the lubricating oil to emulsify, diminishing its lubricating performance and increasing friction and energy consumption in the compressor head. In severe cases, this may lead to catastrophic failures such as seizure of the compressor head.

Risk of icing in cold environments

In winter or low-temperature environments, condensate that is not drained promptly is highly likely to freeze at the bottom of cylinders or in narrow sections of piping. Ice blockages can completely interrupt the flow of compressed air, paralyzing the entire pneumatic system and severely disrupting the company’s production schedule.

Correct Drainage and Maintenance Recommendations

To avoid the aforementioned issues and ensure stable system operation, the following measures are recommended:

  • Install a reliable automatic drain and inspect its operating condition regularly to ensure smooth, unobstructed drainage.
  • For cylinders equipped with manual drainage, establish a strict daily draining procedure; in particular, increase the frequency of draining during seasons of high ambient humidity.
  • Regularly clean dirt and impurities from inside the air receiver tank to keep the compressed-air storage equipment clean, thereby improving compressed-air quality at the source.
